The head of Canada's broadcast regulator won't be re-appointed to the post, the Canadian Press reports.

CRTC chairman Konrad von Finckenstein's five-year term expires in January.

He's expected to meet with his staff on Tuesday to inform them he won't be coming back, despite reports suggesting he'd like to stay on the job. He and the Conservative government have butted heads several times since he was appointed in 2007.

Last spring, a feud erupted over a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on how Internet companies bill their subscribers, prompting Mr. von Finckenstein to back down and order a review.

The Harper government also hasn't agreed with Mr. von Finckenstein's stand on restricting foreign ownership of telecommunications companies, going to court to get a decision overturned.

A spokesperson for the CRTC didn't immediately return a request for more information.
